The story behind the name of our company goes back to the beginning of the 20th century. Back then, life was certainly not as smooth as many of us have the privilege to experience it nowadays. Thinking back a hundred years of so, the greatest inspiration for our enterprise come that time, from a tiny little town called Kälviä now part of Kokkola, some 500 km northwest of Helsinki.
Our greatest inspirer is a woman called Lucina Hagman (1853-1946).
Lucina Hagman lived in a time when it was rare for girls to obtain an education of any kind. However, Ms. Hagman succeeded in this and became an active voice in a society that was unequal in so many ways compared to today.
Lucina Hagman became a teacher, a school director, and a spokesperson for women’s rights. She was among the first 19 female representatives of the House of Parliament in 1907, Ms. Hagman believed in equal opportunities and equal education for boys and girls, and she became a school director of the country’s first co-educational school, Helsingin Suomalainen Yhteiskoulu in Helsinki.
Lucina Hagman was also a co-founder of Marttaliitto in 1899, a union promoting women’s education and skills. In 1928 Ms. Hagman received the honorary title of Finland’s first female professor for her remarkable achievements for the Finnish society. Ms. Hagman never married nor became a biological mother, but she became a foster mother for four of her siblings’ children.
Therefore, we at Lucina Education want to be active in lifting her legacy back to light – where it truly belongs – and want to honor her life work in the name and logo of our company. The name Lucina originally comes from the Latin word “Lux” and means Light. A heartfelt thank you, Lucina Hagman, for clearing the path for generations then, now and in the future! Your work is highly appreciated and valued.
In many cultures, a candle symbolizes teachers and their work, which is why we think there I no better way to visually tell our story than to usea a cande and its light in our logo.
